Researchers at Rice University started turning coal into graphene, a raw material with many applications in electronics. After that, they realized they could turn any source of carbon into graphene, including cockroaches, coffee grounds, and cookies.

Graphene has metal-like properties that can be used as a conductor in medicine, aerospace, and electronics.
