Walking 3,000 Steps A Day Could Improve Longevity

The magic number of 10,000 steps per day for a healthier life may not be as accurate as once thought.

The idea of 10,000 steps per day originated in Japan in the 1980s, not based on scientific research.

New research from the University of Granada shows that even just 2,600 to 2,800 steps per day is associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease and improved longevity.

“The more steps you take, the better. There is no excessive number of steps that has been proven to be harmful to health. Reaching 7,000 to 9,000 steps a day is a sensible health goal for most people.” said the study’s lead author, Francisco B. Ortega, a professor at UGR's Department of Physical Education and Sports.
