Here's Today's Feel-Good Story:
Over the last couple of decades, deep-sea exploration has come in leaps and bounds with fascinating discoveries.
One of the latest discoveries was in the East Pacific Rise off Central America where an undersea volcano is home to an ecosystem of snails, worms, and bacteria under the seafloor.
Scientists used an underwater robot to overturn chunks of volcanic crust and discover cave systems in which animals enter and exit them freely.
“On land we have long known of animals living in cavities underground, and in the ocean of animals living in sand and mud, but for the first time, scientists have looked for animals beneath hydrothermal vents,” says the institute’s executive director, Jyotika Virmani.
“This truly remarkable discovery of a new ecosystem, hidden beneath another ecosystem, provides fresh evidence that life exists in incredible places.”
