Alicia Keys is returning as host of the Grammys on Sunday, January 26. The Grammy winner stopped by On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Thursday, January 23, and shared what to expect from the awards show this year as well as her view on the recent Grammys controversy amid former CEO Deborah Dugan's allegations.
Billie Eilish and Lizzo lead the nominations this year, with nods in each of the big four categories â Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist. Lil Nas X and Ariana Grande are also frontrunners when it comes to the 2020 nominations, which have made headlines following Duganâs claims that the voting system is reportedly âbiased.âÂ
âYou know, in regards to my reaction to the nominations specifically,â Alicia shared with Seacrest. â⊠I think itâs always been a little bit confusing ⊠but, you know, listen: the voting process on all levels â like letâs not get it twisted â itâs not always accurate. I mean, like, letâs look at the country! ⊠Thereâs definitely flaws and things have to be updated and reimagined on so many levels for everything, not just this particular situation, but for our country, for the world, thereâs a lot of change on the precipice.â
The âUnderdogâ singer admitted even she isnât fully aware what's going on.
âIâm learning like you guys are learning,â she added. âIâm not in a position to talk about all of that stuff because itâs confusing, but definitely as artists, and as an artist and as a representative of the artistic community, Iâm here to celebrate the artist and Iâm here to celebrate the beautiful, beautiful love that it takes,â Keys continued. â[I'm here] to celebrate them and ⊠lift them up.â
The host, who crushed the role at the 61st annual Grammy Awards last year, concluded sheâs all about bringing that fun energy.
âLike I said there is enough drama going on in the world,â she shared. âThereâs enough crazy things happening. Weâre all trying to make it through our days, make it through our lives, and I think music is the one thing that can make us all have our shoulders drop and feel like weâre understood and we feel loved and we feel like itâs possible.â
Demi Lovato is also taking the stage at the 2020 Grammys on Sunday, making a comeback following her 2018 overdose.
âIâm pretty sure Iâm not supposed to tell you what Demi Lovato has planned,â Keys hilariously told Tanya Rad when pressed about the songstressâ return. âBut what I do know is that Iâm really excited about it and Iâm really excited for her and I think itâs going to be really special.â
