Dax Shepard And Kristen Bell Talk About Working Hard For Their Marriage

Life is not always butterflies and rainbows, we all know that from having lived it. But when we look to our favorite celebrities, we tend to forget that they're normal people just like we are!

That's part of why I love Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard so much.

The couple, who has been together for 12 years now, has never held back with honesty when it comes to marriage, raising kids, and simply being normal people.

Their latest PEOPLE cover story dives even further into how they make marriage - especially a marriage in Hollywood - work, and honestly get ready to get kind of emotional, because these two are so incredible together.

As it turns out, it hasn't always been the perfect path for these two. They met briefly at a dinner party, and reconnected a few weeks later at a hockey game before they started dating.

But then Dax did something that we've all seen before - a couple months into their relationship, Dax felt he wasn't ready to settle down and broke up with Kristen.

Only to return a couple days later after realizing that he was leaving for the wrong reasons.

“I was like, ‘That’s the best personality I’ve ever seen on a woman. I need to be around it,” recalls Shepard. “I want to be around it when I’m 80, but how?”

After that, the couple admits it took trust, honesty and "a little couples therapy" to get to where they are today. It also took compromise from both sides.

Kristen knew that Dax didn't really believe in a traditional marriage, and for that reason gave up the idea that they needed to officially be married in order to be together for the long haul.

“He has a great argument that the state having a piece of paper doesn’t mean he’s going to be nice to me and by my side for the rest of my life... I had surrendered, like ‘Okay, well, I’m never going to get any sort of traditional marriage out of this, and that’s okay because I trust him.’”

But in a similar move of love for his partner, Dax realized that doing that for Kristen would be a "big sign."

“Forget the tradition or history of marriage as a concept, you knowing I was doing something that I didn’t want to do because I loved you was a big sign for you.”

And the rest is pretty much history for the couple, who has two daughters, Delta and Lincoln, together.

Kristen says she and Dax grew up watching movies where it was also love at first sight and that it was supposed to be easy, but realized that's not really how it works.

“It took me a while to realize, ‘Oh, that was such a lie,’ because things that you work really, really, really hard for always yield the best results.”

I cannot agree more. I love these two and the way they're able to talk about things they deal with just like the rest of us.
