Getting Plants "Drunk" Can Help Protect Them Against Droughts

Scientists have reported that main crop plants thrived even after two weeks without water when soaked in ethanol alcohols.

Finding out about inbuilt resiliencies within plants can help us find a solution for climate change and how it affects production.

“We find treating common crops such as wheat and rice with exogenous ethanol can increase production during drought,” said lead study author Dr. Motoaki Seki. “This offers us a cheap and easy way to increase crop yield even when water is limited, without the need for genetic modification.”
